Kelly Lawton-Abbott represents clients in the tech industry as their outside general counsel. Kelly has an entrepreneurial spirit and business mindset that she incorporates in her legal strategies.
For early stage technology clients, Kelly handles formations, basic corporate governance and compliance, note and venture financing, general employment transactional needs, commercial/tech transactions, intellectual property, and privacy compliance. For growth/late-stage/public companies, Kelly works on commercial contract negotiation in web mapping services, news aggregators, and browsers, review of third party data and open source models for model training, and provides product counsel support for web mapping services, browsers, and telecommunication services, with a focus on AI features. Kelly has been recognized as a “Rising Star” by Super Lawyers every year since 2020, an honor awarded to only 2.5% of attorneys under the age of 40. Before joining SSM, Kelly worked for a Seattle-based boutique law firm where she worked with clients in the media and gaming industry, working with solo entrepreneurs to Fortune 500 companies. Kelly was born and raised in Southern California, but resides and supports clients in the beautiful Pacific Northwest with her husband and two dogs. When Kelly isn’t working, she loves going for walks with her dogs, exploring art, and escaping to the mountains for weekend getaway. EDUCATION
